Paros and Naxos are the most practical islands in the Cyclades for a yacht charter. They are only about 18 nautical miles apart, both have real harbours and good provisioning, and from Naxos you can reach the Small Cyclades in a day. They also sit in meltemi territory, so the same rules apply as elsewhere in the central Aegean: plan flexibly, and lean toward June and September. Both islands are a natural stop on any yacht charter in Greece that takes in the Cyclades.

Paros

  • Naoussa: the highlight harbour, with a Venetian fort at the harbour mouth, waterfront tavernas and easy access for a night in town.
  • Antiparos: quieter anchorages and coves, a good lunch stop on the way south or west. The Blue Lagoon at Despotiko is popular for swimming.
  • Paros as a base: a secondary charter base for the Cyclades; useful if you want to start in the middle of the islands rather than crossing from Athens. Our guide to charter bases compares it with Athens, and a Paros yacht charter also puts Mykonos within a day’s sail to the north.

Naxos

  • The largest island in the Cyclades, with a long sandy coastline on its west side (Agios Prokopios, Plaka, Agios Georgios) that suits lunch stops.
  • Naxos town: the Portara marble gate, the old Venetian kastro and local kitron liqueur.
  • Provisioning: some of the most reliable in the area, so a good place to stock up before the Small Cyclades. That makes Naxos the natural starting point for a yacht charter into the Small Cyclades.

Sailing between them

Paros to Naxos is about 18 NM, an easy morning or afternoon leg. Both sit within the exposed central Aegean, so watch the wind in the Paros–Naxos strait, where meltemi gusts accelerate between the islands.

Onward from Naxos

The Small Cyclades (Koufonisia, Schinoussa, Iraklia) are about 28 NM from Naxos and are among the quietest waters in the Cyclades. Ios adds a real harbour and nightlife. See our 7-night Cyclades itinerary.

When to go

June and September are the best windows for a first bareboat crew; July and August need a flexible plan and an experienced skipper. See our best time page.

Frequently asked questions

How far is Paros from Naxos by yacht?

About 18 nautical miles, an easy morning or afternoon sail between the two islands.

Paros or Naxos: which is better for a yacht charter?

Choose Paros for its harbours and the atmosphere of Naoussa, and Naxos for beaches and provisioning. Most charter weeks in the area include both islands.

Can you start a yacht charter from Paros?

Yes. Paros is a secondary charter base in the Cyclades. The largest fleets are in Athens, at Lavrio and Alimos.

Is the meltemi a problem around Paros and Naxos?

Yes, especially in July and August. The strait between the two islands funnels the wind, so plan shorter legs and keep bailout ports in mind.

Former charter boat captain and yacht owner

I know what makes a yacht charter truly worth your time because I’ve spent years seeing the cruising world from the helm.

I’m a former charter boat captain. After years of captaining tourist charter boats, I bought my own yacht and set off to explore some of the world’s most interesting cruising grounds. I rarely stay anywhere longer than three days, which has taught me to quickly distinguish between the anchorages that are genuinely worth stopping for and those that are better left behind.

Today, I share that experience to help yacht charter travelers choose the right destinations, routes, and experiences — based on what actually matters once you’re out on the water.
